1/f – Signal Intelligence
The fractal pattern in heartbeat, music and starlight

Between order and chaos lies the realm we live in. No rhythm is entirely uniform, no signal entirely random. A pattern runs through our world like a red thread: in the heartbeat, in music, in sleep, in space. A hundred-year-old riddle that no one has fully explained to this day.
What this book is about
In 1925 an engineer in a telephone laboratory measures the noise of an amplifier tube and finds something that should not be there: the lower the frequency, the stronger the noise, in a fixed ratio, one over f. A hundred years later, nobody has fully explained that ratio. But it has since turned up everywhere anyone has cared to listen.
This book takes the riddle seriously and follows it through four acts: from the laboratory into the body, from the body into the world, and finally to the question of what it means when heartbeats, sleep, language, stock prices, quantum chips and the flicker of distant stars all show the same pattern. It explains why a healthy heart is not a metronome, why a pile of sand almost solved the riddle, and why physicists at some point stopped listening. It shows what a smartwatch measures and what it does not explain, and what a forty-thousand-year-old bone flute has to do with any of it.
You will take three things away. First: between perfect order and pure chance lies a narrow band, and living things stay exactly there. Second: 1/f is not always 1/f; the small exponent in the denominator reveals what state a system is in, and it can be measured. Third: the pattern spans sixteen orders of magnitude, from the electron to the galaxy, and whether that is a law of nature or an accident of statistics is the open question the book ends on.
Written for readers without prior knowledge, with images instead of formulas. Those who want the mathematics will find it in the appendix. The reading sample shows chapter 25, "Sixteen Orders of Magnitude".
